Kazakhstan commits to 30% methane reduction and launches Just Energy Transition at COP28

Kazakhstan commits to 30% methane reduction and launches Just Energy Transition at COP28

In a landmark announcement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared that Kazakhstan is joining the Global Methane Pledge, showcasing the country's commitment to tackling one of the most potent greenhouse gases contributing to climate change, Akorda reported.

President Tokayev, addressing the international community, emphasized the need for bold action and collaboration in the face of the global climate crisis.

"Reducing methane emissions is the fastest way to slow the rate of global warming," he stated, underlining the urgency of addressing environmental challenges.

The Global Methane Pledge, an initiative aimed at reducing methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030 compared to 2020 levels, has gained significant traction globally. Kazakhstan's decision to join reflects its dedication to playing a proactive role in combating climate change.

President Tokayev went on to express Kazakhstan's broader commitment to sustainable development, acknowledging the importance of critical minerals, including rare earths, in the transition to a low-carbon economy.

"As the world decarbonizes, critical minerals will become irreplaceable in the coming decades. Kazakhstan is ready to become the main supplier of these transition minerals," he declared, signaling the country's ambition to contribute significantly to the global green supply chain.

Furthermore, the Kazakh leader highlighted the need for a balanced approach that integrates climate protection with national development.

"It is fair not to demand from emerging economies to sacrifice national development and modernization in the name of climate protection," President Tokayev asserted, emphasizing the interconnectedness of climate goals and economic advancement.

Kazakhstan also announced the implementation of the region's first Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). President Tokayev has pledged to address the significant coal issue in the region by implementing the Just Energy Transition Partnership in Kazakhstan. This initiative reflects the country's commitment to a fair and equitable shift away from fossil fuels, in line with global efforts to tackle social and economic challenges associated with energy transitions.
